A new study reveals that the eventual cosmic breakup of Phobos – the innermost moon of Mars – could either create a ring system around the Red Planet or see the leftover chunks go crashing down into Mars.

Mars’s gravity is actually pulling Phobos in by about 6.6 feet every 100 years, which could rip the moon apart within 20 million to 40 million years.

Once it starts to happen, it will do so in a hurry – in 40 days or less.
