Looking up at the night sky, it’s impossible not to wonder: Are we alone?
The notion of intelligent life on other planets is a captivating idea. The mere possibility of aliens and extraterrestrial civilizations are indeed the stuff of dreams, fueling scientific studies, skepticism, debate, hoaxes, and the entire realm of science fiction and fantasy.
Now, imagine there is a civilization billions of light years away contemplating the same questions we ask ourselves: Is there anyone out there, and how can we possibility reach out to them?
For UC Santa Barbara physicist Philip Lubin, this could all be solved thanks to advances in photonics which would allow us to be seen across the universe. What’s more, he says in a new study that the technology already exists.
