I posted this on my Facebook page, but I thought I would share it here as well.
If ever there was a lesson we needed in humility, it is this…
According to PBS News Hour:
“Dozens of people were killed on Saturday during a landslide at a garbage dump in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa.
“An estimated 150 people were inside the Koshe Garbage Landfill when the landslide took place. At least 46 people were killed and 37 people have been rescued, but several dozen people remain missing.
“Most of the dead were women and children.”
Here’s the lesson: While we’re worrying over things like health insurance and politics and that shiny new car or newly constructed home (or even which restaurant to eat at tonight), many people caught up in the landslide were actually living in mud and concrete homes inside the landfill. Why? Because they cannot afford to live anywhere else.
Indeed, according to NPR, “Many people live at the landfill because renting homes there is relatively inexpensive.”
YES! People are forced to live in a fucking landfill because they cannot afford anything else. Can you fucking imagine?
Thankfully, Addis Ababa Mayor Diriba Kuma told the Associated Press that his city plans to “conduct a resettling program to relocate people who live in and around the landfill.”
Please. If you do one thing positive today, make it this: Before you make that purchase, or before you complain about how high your bills are or how low your bank balance is, think of these people and then compare your life to theirs. Take a moment of silence and then think about it again and again until a wave of thankfulness washes over you. And lastly, never forget how fucking LUCKY you are.
Thank you for taking the time to read this to the end. Feel free to share from here or from the Facebook link above.
